Chris Briton pledges to prioritse the protection of young people
Cllr. Chris Briton is the Green Party’s Police and Crime Commissioner candidate for Avon and Somerset. Chris has been a Wells City Councillor for five years and was elected Mayor of Wells two years ago. He also trained as a Probation Officer at Bristol University and then worked for Berkshire and Somerset Probation Services. He then managed Turning Point the drug and alcohol advisory service in Somerset before managing Mendip Children’s Centre in Frome. He recently retired from Somerset Youth Offending Team where he worked as a specialist substance misuse officer.
‘My first priority for the role of PCC’ said Chris, ‘will be to focus on improving the safety and protection of children and young people from physical abuse and sexual harm. Youngsters tend not to have a voice or be able to articulate what has happened to them. I believe we have let them down. That needs to change.’
‘My second priority will be reducing drug related offending and the risks and harm associated with substance misuse. We need to move away from this outdated notion that we can win a “War on Drugs”. Decriminalisation and legalisation should be topics for serious discussion within our communities and with the Home Office.’
Chris will be at a public meeting on the 25th April at the Friends Meeting House in Taunton at 7.00pm if you want to hear him speak or ask him any questions.
